This selection of pictures, part of my long-term project "Not on the same boat", realized with the support of the National Geographic Society's Covid-19 Emergency Fund for Journalists, has been published on the printed special edition of @perimetro__ Roma, which will be presented today at the @contemporary_cluster gallery in Rome. I will talk about my work with the selected authors and discuss it together with Sebastiano Leddi, publisher and founder of Perimetro, and Giacomo Guidi, founder of Cluster. © Matteo Bastianelli/National Geographic Society's Covid-19 Emergency Fund
Sofia, an Ethiopian migrant living in Massa Carrara, is seen with some relatives and friends taking pictures of the hearse carrying the coffin of her 38-year-old brother Ramadan, who was found dead in front of the Roma Tiburtina railway station, where he used to live along with hundreds of migrants abandoned to their fate and forced to live in the street. A volunteer of the Baobab Experience association, is seen comforting Hassan, a man originally from Sudan, who felt despair after being evicted from the Roma Tiburtina railway station. Hundreds of migrants are forced to live on the streets during Italy's lockdown aimed at stopping the spread of coronavirus. 24-year-old Somali refugee Mouna Ali portrayed in the house where she currently lives in Rome. After the closure of the accommodation center in Castelnuovo di Porto, Mouna had no place to go and she was hosted at the home of an Italian citizen for 6 months. Then she found a job and now lives and works as caregiver with a disable woman in the center of Rome. Mouna is studying and working at the same time and she hopes to obtain a permanent residence permit, in order to start a career as a video-maker and interpreter. Like her, thousands of people are waiting to regularize their documents to start living a normal life. © Matteo Bastianelli/National Geographic Society Covid-19 Emergency Fund
Two sanitation workers are seen cleaning the area outside the Roma Tiburtina railway station after the umpteenth eviction of a settlement of over 150 migrants forced to live on the street, even during Italy's lockdown to stop the spread of coronavirus.
